Glass
A common feature of my work is the interplay between geometric pattern (used historically in human design) alongside pattern found in nature, which come together to highlight the delicate balance found between the two.
The piece tells the story of the delicate balance between nature and the affect humans are having on the planet. The delicacy of the engraved dragonfly’s wings, being the only thing that holds off the crushing presence of humanity.
Engraved glass is a purposeful feature in ‘Balancing Act' rather than the use of glass paint, as a move to provoke an ethereal lightness highlighting the delicate balance in nature:
The fact that sometimes what cannot be seen (or is ignored), is of the most importance.
As one moves around the piece there are times when the dragonfly’s face and detail of the wings are hidden, yet another step is taken and it returns into full view.
The piece can be seen in many perspectives, as is true of life.
‘Balancing Act’ was also purposely photographed in an area of human abandonment in an effort to bring new stained glasswork into an area of ruin.
